Dear AAV members,

This summer has kept me on my toes so far with far too much to do and not enough hours in the day to do it. As I was staring at my jam-packed calendar, I started to think about the June and July holidays. First, I would like to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. (For Mother’s Day, my husband bought me a smart bird feeder with a camera…so that is going to be tough to beat.) For those of us in the USA, Independence Day is celebrated on July 4th, and this year we celebrate a monumental milestone— the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. 

My mind wandered from the founders of our country to the founders of our beloved organization. For those of you that missed the wonderful video that was put together last year celebrating the founding members of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, I invite you to watch it here. Perhaps because it was late at night, or because I was avoiding finishing my charts for the day, my mind then wandered to my initiation into avian medicine. The real inception was my first field research position in Kenya. (I know what you are thinking, “Is she really going to talk about starlings again?” Absolutely.)

I travelled overseas for the first time as an undergraduate student field assistant to help evaluate social evolution and environmental coping in the plural cooperatively breeding (and beautiful) superb starling. In this species, extrapair matings are not unusual, and females may copulate with extrapair mates outside of the pair-bond to gain direct resources (such as increased paternal care) and indirect genetic benefits. (This could make for quite a shocking surprise on Father’s Day in the starling community!) Studying these magnificent birds in the wild completely shifted my career path. I traded in the micropipette and benchtop for a stethoscope and exam table, and the rest is history.

I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the recent work of the AAV Conservation and Research Committees and their associated task forces that came together to review this year’s submissions for AAV’s Avian Health Grants and Wild Bird Health Grants. We received many excellent proposals this year, and our volunteer committee members have been diligently scoring each one. We are excited to announce this year’s grant recipients soon! Having started my personal journey in avian research, I know how critical—and sometimes career changing—these grants can be. 

Finally, I want to recognize June as a global celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. The AAV remains dedicated to ensuring all our diverse members not only feel included and represented but also empowered in our organization and in the field of avian medicine. Please save the date for our upcoming webinar in October—Colorful Plumage: LGBTQ+ Perspectives in Veterinary Medicine!

Lafeber Company is now seeking nominations for the T.J Lafeber Avian Practitioner of the Year. This award is presented to an outstanding practitioner that has advanced the quality of health care for companion and/or wild birds. If, like me, your household was incapacitated by the flu virus (and for your sake, I really hope not), you are in luck, because this conference will be available on demand soon! If you haven’t watched an AAV conference on demand before, don’t worry—the conference is easy to access, runs seamlessly, and allows you to bite off smaller chunks of CE at a time between your already busy schedule.

Although one conference has ended, the AAV leadership is still hard at work on organizing the 47th Annual AAV Conference & Expo in Austin, Tx. Last year, we made the decision to offer the same amazing conference content you have come to know and expect at a reduced registration cost. In addition to offering a continued reduced registration cost for our members, we have expanded the hosted food functions to provide more time for socializing and networking at the conference. Cadaver Donations Needed

This year, we are adding some new and exciting material to the hands-on workshop, Surgical Procedures of the Beak and Skull! 

New, groundbreaking material on the development and application of synthetic prosthetics will be presented, led by Dr. Roberto Fecchio along with Drs. Speer and Echols. Participants will have one psittacine cadaver head and one non-psittacine head to work with and will be able to apply pre-printed prosthetics during the lab.  

We are in desperate need of donations of cadaver heads to fill the demand for a full 26 participant class. Large to medium-sized Psittacine species (macaws to grey parrots or Amazon species) are optimal. In addition, other species including ducks, geese, toucans, and chickens are needed. 

If you have clients who are willing to donate their deceased bird's remains to the AAV for the purpose of teaching, please let us know, and save them frozen. Ultimately, the heads will need to be shipped to Dr. Speer for CT scanning prior to the lab to allow Dr. Fecchio to pre-print prosthetics from the CT datasets.

Sofia La Rocca, DVM, MSc, recipient of the AAV Developing Nations Conference Scholarship

A Brazilian veterinarian and researcher specializing in exotic and wild animals, Dr. La Rocca brings a rare blend of clinical excellence and scientific rigor to her field. Her graduate research at the University of Brasília explored total intravenous anesthesia in wild birds — work that directly informs evidence-based care for the species she treats daily. She is a passionate advocate for bridging research and practice, particularly in regions where access to specialized veterinary knowledge remains scarce.

Cecilia Bartels, recipient of the AAV Student Conference Scholarship

A first-year DVM student at Rowan University's Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine, Cecilia is already making her mark on the avian medicine community. In addition to working as a veterinary technician at a Philadelphia avian and exotic practice, she founded the WAZE Club at Rowan, serves on AAV's Student and Avian Welfare Committees, and will conduct research on lead exposure in bald eagles this summer. Her dedication to education, conservation, and clinical care reflects the future of our specialty.

There are many approaches to resolving the condition of egg binding. Drawing upon his 45 years in clinical avian practice, Dr. Harris will share methods that he has found to be safe and effective.

HARCC invites proposals focused on advancing avian clinical care in areas such as diagnostics, therapies, surgery, nutrition, and behavior. The organization also welcomes conservation-focused projects that support the health, welfare, and long-term sustainability of avian species, including free-ranging companion bird species. HARCC will allocate up to $100,000 in total funding for 2026, with individual one-year projects eligible for up to $20,000. Indirect costs are not covered. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline. Funding decisions will be based on scientific impact, innovation, collaboration, and likelihood of success.

Georgia Fletcher Memorial Award Essay Contest For Veterinary Technician Students

Quaker Parakeet Society is providing a monetary award to a student or students who is/are currently enrolled in and studying to become a Certified Veterinary Technician or a Registered Veterinary Technician, in memory of Georgia Fletcher, who was an advocate of aviculture, avian medicine and research and a great supporter of the Quaker Parakeet Society. The scholarships are supported by a grant from Harrison’s Bird Foods.

Dear AAV members,

It was great seeing so many AAV members and catching up with colleagues in the European Association of Avian Medicine at the International Conference on Avian, Herpetological, Exotic Mammal, Zoo and Wildlife Medicine (ICARE) in Lisbon, Portugal this month.

After completion of the conference, I stuck around for a few days for sightseeing. Per usual during my travels, my attention was turned toward the avian imagery around the city. Lisbon’s coat of arms consists of a ship with a raven on each side. Legend has it that ravens protected the body of St. Vincent of Saragossa (the patron saint of Lisbon) after his death. When the relics of St. Vincent were brought back to Lisbon by ship, the ravens were said to have followed. Swallows were also depicted all over the city—in street art, as store decorations, and for sale as ceramic keepsakes. In Portuguese culture, swallows serve as a symbol of love, loyalty, hope, and new beginnings.

Despite spending most of my time in the city, I was fortunate to see a decent number of living birds, as well. I found the greatest diversity at the Jardim Botânico Tropical. Upon entering the botanical gardens, the noise of the city traffic was suddenly muted and replaced with bird noises. However, it wasn’t the gentle cooing of the common wood pigeon. Instead, it was the all too familiar screech of rose-ringed parakeets. Psittacula krameri are only one of a many invasive avian species in Lisbon—they are joined by blue-crowned parakeets, Quaker/monk parakeets, crested mynah, and even Senegal parrots.

A local also told me about an interesting sight that I unfortunately never came across, which is the use of raptors (typically harris hawks) for non-lethal pigeon control in the city center. Another interesting method of pigeon population control in the city includes the use of “contraceptive lofts” where pigeons are enticed by the provision of food and water, and their eggs are removed and replaced with dummy eggs. An oral contraceptive (nicarbazin) has also been used in Portugal to help reduce pigeon populations. Unfortunately, not all available population control methods are as humane.

While I love seeing parrots and pigeons in my travels, invasive species and overpopulation can obviously cause major issues. If you have ever found yourself sitting on a 7-hour flight mulling over the complex relationship of various bird species and humans (or are just passionate about these topics!), then I encourage you to join our Avian Welfare Committee or Legislative Committee. These two committees work together closely to spread awareness of relevant issues pertaining to birds. For more information, visit our committee pages:

Dear AAV members,

We are just a few days away from the start of spring, and I couldn’t be more excited (especially after the recent weather fluctuations here in the Northeastern region of the United States - we went from 80F temperatures one day to snow the next day!). I have been busy prepping both my garden beds and my calendar for the rest of 2026. Now that the Veterinary Internship and Residency Match Program results are finalized for next year and the chaos of application reviews, interviews, and ranking is completed, I can finally shift my focus on what continuing education I want to attend (and want to encourage my house officers and technicians to attend!). Both the ABVP Symposium and International Conference on Avian, Herpetological, Exotic Mammal, Zoo and Wildlife Medicine (ICARE)—hosted by our colleagues in the European Association of Avian Veterinarians—are fast approaching in April with many AAV members scheduled as speakers.

While I of course already have my “time off” request in for the 47th AAV Annual Conference & Expo in Austin, Texas in October, another conference I now always look forward to is the AAV Avian Medicine Virtual conference. Who doesn’t love a succinct, 1-day CE event that requires no travel and can be completed in the comfort of your own home?

This year’s AAV Avian Medicine Virtual line-up includes a little of everything: pelican medicine, emergency and critical care, avian radiology, coelomic ultrasound, pectoral girdle anatomy and disease, neoplasia, and behavior. Total value of this scholarship is approximately $4,000.

New for this year, AAV is excited to expand scholarship opportunities by offering conference scholarships for one veterinary student and one veterinary technician or vet tech student, each valued at approximately $1,500.

We had a fantastic time at Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas, connecting with colleagues and celebrating all things avian medicine! Our booth was buzzing throughout the event, and it was a pleasure to welcome many new members into the AAV community while also catching up with familiar faces. One of the highlights of the conference was spending time with AAV allied professional members Skye and Kim from SouthWest Exotic Avian Rescue (SWEAR) who brought their delightful parrots with plenty of personality and smiles to the exhibit hall. 

We were proud to provide a strong avian track, presented by Dr. Anna Osofsky and Dr. Anneliese Strunk, which was very well received by attendees. The sessions showcased important and practical topics in avian medicine and highlighted the value of avian care within the broader veterinary profession. Dear AAV members,

Thanks to Valentine’s Day, the month of February is often associated with love and relationships. As such, it seems like a great time to talk about our Aviculture and Small Flock Management Committee! 

AAV Aviculture and Small Flock Management Committee

Aviculture is defined as the keeping and breeding of birds. While this definition seems simple enough, most aviculture societies have complex goals that include legislative awareness, research support, encouragement of conservation and restoration, and education. 

Breeding is an integral part of aviculture. Birds bred by zoological facilities, conservationists, and professional breeders serve to maintain captive populations, educate the public, inspire others to care about birds in the wild, safeguard endangered species, and provide companion birds. 

While there are many excellent breeders dedicated to responsible breeding practices, I recommend prospective bird owners adopt a new feathered family member through a rescue organization whenever possible. Rescuers are another group of extraordinary aviculturists that dedicate their time, money, and effort to take in thousands of relinquished birds each year.

Black History Month

Of much greater importance than Valentine’s Day, February is when Black History Month is commemorated in the United States and Canada. This is a time to highlight and honor the culture and contributions of black people in various aspects of society, including veterinary medicine. Take a moment to reflect on the past by reading about influential black veterinarians that shaped our profession and consider ways that you can encourage diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine in the years to come (start by learning more about important DEI topics through AVMA’s Journey for Teams  or become a mentor and role model for children to inspire interest in our profession through League of VetaHumanz/This is How We “Role”) Every step we take toward a more diverse and inclusive organization makes the AAV even stronger!

AAV Aviculture Committee Needs Your Help to Highlight Exceptional Aviculturists

The Aviculture and Small Flock Management Committee is hoping to run a new series showcasing avian breeders, rescues, and aviaries through interviews, photos, and/or videos of their daily caretaking responsibilities. Our goal is to highlight exceptional aviculturists who express passion in their work and have an interest in educating other bird nerds about their work. The AAV will continue to offer our Developing Nation Veterinarian Conference Scholarship for the AAV Annual Conference & Expo, to be held October 2-5, 2026 in Austin, Texas, supporting access to advanced avian education and global collaboration. Total value of this scholarship is approximately $4,000.

New for this year, AAV is excited to expand scholarship opportunities by offering conference scholarships for one veterinary student and one veterinary technician or vet tech student, each valued at approximately $1,500. 

All scholarships include: conference registration, attendance at one lab, four nights of lodging, and a travel stipend. Full eligibility details and application instructions are available at aav.org/scholarships.

If you have not yet checked that off your 2026 “To Do” list, I encourage you to renew today!

Speaking of membership, I wanted to start 2026 out by highlighting our Member Services Committee. This committee helps promote and expand the benefits of AAV membership, works to attract new members to the AAV community, and supports activities that support a sense of community among AAV members, with a special focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This resource will make it easier for veterinarians, caregivers, and the public to locate qualified rescuers when birds are in need.

Dear AAV members,

Happy holiday season! It is hard for me to believe that 2025 will be over in just two short weeks. This year seems to have flown by! With 2026 right around the corner, it’s a great time to reflect on our accomplishments this year and goals for the year to come—both personally and for the AAV.

As an association, we have been busier than ever living up to our mission statement of promoting avian health, welfare, and conservation through education, advocacy, and science.

Education

2025: The AAV provided 2 great conferences this year, including AAV Avian Medicine Virtual 2025 and our 46th annual AAV Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ (which will be available on-demand starting in January). We collaborated with the WVC Annual Conference in Las Vegas for the first time and continued sponsoring the avian tracks at VMX. In addition to numerous new handouts (several of which were translated into 5 different languages by the International Committee!), our education committee created a Golden Egg on reproductive disease. The Student Committee was also busy providing educational opportunities for students, including a new Avian Medicine Basics webinar series.

Looking ahead: We hope you will all join us in Austin, TX for the 47th annual conference in October and online for AAV Avian Medicine Virtual in May! For members attending WVC Vegas or VMX, join our sponsored sessions and volunteer to help at the AAV booth. Keep your eyes peeled for the second installment in the Avian Medicine Basics webinar series for students in February and for the next Golden Egg on cardiovascular disease.

Advocacy

2025: The AAV continues to have a seat in the AVMA House of Delegates as an allied association. This year, members Heather Barron, Jen Riley, Andrea Winkel, and Cheryl Greenacre served the AAV and AVMA in various capacities to advocate for avian welfare and our organization’s interests in topics ranging from the free-roaming cat policy to improved use of veterinary technicians. Heather and Jen also attended this year’s American Bird Conservancy Fly-in in Washington, DC in April.

Looking ahead: The AVMA is working on numerous issues that will affect our members and avian welfare, including the role of veterinary professional associates, free roaming cats (visit the AAV position statement here), and stocking of compounded drugs. If you are an AVMA member, you can comment on many of the policies directly on the AVMA website. You can also voice your concerns and opinions to Jen Riley, our HOD delegate. The AVMA will also be hosting a roundtable on the Minor Use and Minor Species Animal Heath Act in January—and we want your opinions (see below). As an international organization, we hope you will keep us updated on important legislative changes occurring in your country or region, as well!

Science

2025: Funding for avian research projects was expanded in 2025 due to member donations, auction proceeds, and a very generous sponsorship from Harrison’s Bird Foods. More than $25,000 was awarded to support 4 projects through the AAV Avian Health Grant and AAV Wild Bird Health Grant.

Looking ahead: With the start of the new year, our Research Committee will be busy evaluating pre-proposals (due January 9th) and full proposals (due April 13th) for both the AAV Avian Health Grant and AAV Wild Bird Health Grant (they need your help reviewing applications - join the process by contacting us). Harrison’s Bird Foods is providing funding of up to $20,000 for the 2026 grant cycle, allowing for continued support of avian research. All AAV members will benefit from hearing the project results from the 2025 grant winners at the annual conference in Austin.

While 2025 was certainly a productive year, we hope to make 2026 even better, and we can’t do it without your help! Remember to renew your membership for next year (and consider registering your veterinary technicians, too - it’s a great gift for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or another holiday they may be celebrating!).

What Drugs Do You Wish You Had for Your Patients?

This year after the end of the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference, AAV will have a representative at the AVMA MUMS Roundtable on January 11th, 2026. “The Minor Use and Minor Species Animal Health Act of 2004,” commonly referred to as the “MUMS Act”, was signed into United States law on August 2, 2004. The law is intended to make more medications legally available to veterinarians and animal owners for the treatment of minor animal species and uncommon diseases in the major animal species. For our avian patients, all species except chickens or turkeys are considered “minor species”, and in chickens and turkeys, “minor use” is defined as if the number of animals eligible for treatment annually is less than 72 million for chickens and 14 million for turkeys.

 

The AVMA MUMS Roundtable aims to engage the diverse veterinary community in identifying critical gaps in drug availability and establishing priorities for each stakeholder group and generate feedback on proposed strategies to address these identified gaps.

The AAV is accepting pre-proposals for our 2026 Avian Health Grants. This funding supports research projects that advance avian health in companion species, zoological species, and wild bird populations.

Special Grant Funding for Avian Health Research - Up to $20,000!

For 2026, a special grant of up to $20,000 is available for projects related to pet birds. This funding is made possible by a donation from Harrison’s Bird Foods.

Dear AAV members,

My husband and I recently traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico to celebrate Día de Muertos. Amidst the marigolds, papel picados (colorful banners), and calacas (skeleton figures) covering the city in preparation for the holiday, one thing that stood out to me was the widespread depiction of hummingbirds in the local artwork. From small wooden alebrijes – heavily decorated folk art sculptures–to huge murals covering the sides of buildings, hummingbirds were everywhere…. including occasionally flying by our heads during our trip! 

We learned from locals that hummingbirds represent energy, vitality, and love in Mexican culture. Hummingbirds were revered in both Mayan and Aztec culture and remain an important symbol to this day in Oaxaca and other areas of Mexico. They are thought to be messengers from the spirit world that are tasked with carrying the souls of loved ones back to the land of the living. Of course, this just begins to scratch the surface of the significance of hummingbirds in Mexican culture. Fortunately (and previously unbeknownst to me!), one of our amazing AAV members previously wrote a blog on hummingbirds in Mexican culture which you can find here. It is incredible the information available on the AAV website—if you only know where to look! Take a minute to scroll through; I promise you will be surprised at the amount of material available.

I spent a lot of my trip wondering about the significance of birds to other cultures around the world. If there is a bird of importance to your religion or culture, feel free to share with us at international-committee@aav.org – we would love to share this information with our members! Although the majority of the AAV’s members practice in the United States, it is important to remember that we are a global organization. We have members in 67 countries. We also now have student chapters in 18 countries (many of which are new in recent years!). 

Representation of our diverse membership is incredibly important. I encourage members to join our amazing International Committee so that we can share information about different birds and diseases seen around the world, make educational materials more accessible through translation, and collaborate with other international avian organizations. AAV is your organization, so make sure your voice is heard! 

Now that my major trips for 2025 have come to an end, it’s time to look forward to upcoming trips in 2026…including the next AAV conference. Keep an eye on your inbox and the AAV social media feed for an upcoming announcement on next year’s conference location!

I am excited to be stepping into the role as the AAV president for the 2025-2026 year. It was wonderful to catch up with so many friends, colleagues, and fellow bird lovers at the 46th Annual AAV Conference & Expo in Phoenix this month. The conference provided a multitude of learning opportunities through lectures, hands-on-workshops, posters, and the Drury Reavill Research & Pathology forum, as well as time to unwind and appreciate the beauty of birds during the morning bird walk and free flying parrot demonstration. For those unable to attend, we missed having you…but the conference will be available on demand soon, so you can catch up on everything from fundamentals to the latest, cutting-edge research in avian medicine!

As one of my last responsibilities as President Elect, I emceed the AAV Community Forum at the conference. This is an opportunity for our amazing committee chairs to update membership on current projects and opportunities to become involved in the AAV.  This portion of the conference has become near and dear to my heart, and it’s not just because of the prizes and the occasional bottle of wine or two that show up. Until I became more deeply involved in AAV’s Advisory Council, I did not know how much the members of our organization accomplish. As a volunteer organization, it is truly impressive the amount of avian education our members produce in various formats, including two conferences per year, collaboration on avian tracks at two other national conferences, client handouts, “how to” videos, Golden Eggs, the Avian Veterinary Clinical Competency Program, monthly blog posts, legislation updates, student webinars, social media posts, and so much more.

As AAV members, I encourage you to do three things:

We’re pleased to share that AAV has updated its membership policies to make it easier for veterinary technicians to join our community. In the past, technicians could only become members if a veterinarian from their clinic was also an AAV member. That requirement is no longer in place—any veterinary technician is now welcome to join AAV directly. We’ve also simplified requirements so that technicians in states without formal licensure requirements may now become AAV members. These changes open the door for more veterinary professionals to be part of AAV and benefit from our resources, education, and network.

Dear AAV Members,

Recent headlines remind us just how dynamic the world of avian health and conservation can be. A new study has raised concerns that highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) may now be spreading through the air and via contaminated wastewater in certain agricultural settings—an important reminder that emerging disease threats can shift quickly and demand vigilant monitoring. In Texas, birders celebrated the arrival of a rare Great Lakes Piping Plover, VGV, that made the remarkable journey from Wisconsin, underscoring the critical role of migratory stopover habitats. Across the Atlantic, a rewilding initiative in London is assessing the feasibility of reintroducing white storks, an effort fueled by growing public interest and increased sightings. In India, conservationists recently transferred ten critically endangered long-billed vultures to a new breeding facility in Hyderabad, expanding genetic diversity and bolstering the species’ recovery efforts. Meanwhile, the 2025 U.S. State of the Birds report delivered a sobering update—over one-third of American bird species remain at high or moderate conservation concern, with grassland and arid-land birds declining by over 40% since 1970, even as a few species show signs of recovery.

These developments illustrate why it is vital for avian veterinarians to stay as current as possible with continuing education. Understanding emerging disease pathways, recognizing shifts in migration patterns, supporting conservation initiatives, and interpreting population trends are all essential to providing the best possible care for birds, whether in clinical practice, research, or field conservation. The upcoming AAV conference offers an ideal setting for this kind of professional growth. Now, our focus shifts toward the future of avian medicine. Research Update: Advancing Diagnosis of Macrorhabdus ornithogaster in Budgerigars

This recently completed research project funded by AAV’s 2023 Avian Health Grant has yielded promising advances in the diagnosis and study of Macrorhabdus ornithogaster in budgerigars. The aim of this project was to investigate improved diagnostic and treatment options for the fungal pathogen Macrorhabdus ornithogaster (MO) in budgerigars. Through this project, investigators were able to successfully develop and validate an MO quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay - an easy, reliable, non-invasive test to diagnose this fungus antemortem. In addition, they were able to culture MO using a modified protocol. Even though they were unable to sustain this culture long enough to test for the best antifungal drugs, they found alternative ways to grow the fungus, which can be used to improve culture maintenance for antifungal testing. Finally, investigators found a lower than expected number of MO-positive birds in the Brookfield Zoo budgerigar aviary, which could be due to intermittent shedding of this pathogen. Birds with lower body weights were more likely to be MO qPCR positive, so body weight could serve as an indicator for identifying suspect cases. They did not observe a decline (response to treatment) based on the amount of MO DNA from budgerigars treated with in-water antifungals compared to controls; however, the results do support that this pathogen is intermittently shed. This information provides the foundation for next project steps, including determining the best timepoints to sample for this intermittently shed organism. The project results will be able to offer clinicians a new diagnostic test to identify this organism, provide information for improving MO culture maintenance, and establish next steps for MO sampling and assessing efficacy of other antifungals in affected companion, wild, and zoo-housed birds.

As we move into February, I want to take a moment to reflect on both the richness of this month’s significance and the ongoing conversations that shape our profession. February is Black History Month—a time to honor the contributions, resilience, and impact of Black individuals in all fields, including veterinary medicine. It is also a time to recommit ourselves to diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that our profession welcomes and supports individuals from all backgrounds.

Spotlight on Neurodiversity in Veterinary Medicine

This past month, AAV held a compelling seminar on neurodiversity in veterinary medicine, featuring a diverse panel of professionals who shared their experiences navigating the field as neurodivergent individuals. The discussion, led by Dr. Stephany Lewis, included the following esteemed panelists:

The discussion highlighted both the challenges and strengths of neurodivergence in veterinary medicine. Some key takeaways included:

AAV is committed to fostering an environment where all veterinary professionals feel valued and supported. Celebrating Black History Month in Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary medicine has been shaped by trailblazing Black professionals who have advanced animal care, research, and education. Figures such as Dr. Alfreda Johnson Webb, one of the first Black female veterinarians in the U.S., and Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson, founder of the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, have paved the way for future generations.

As we celebrate Black History Month, I encourage our members to support and uplift Black colleagues in our profession. Whether it’s through mentorship, education, or advocacy, every step we take toward inclusivity strengthens our field. AAV remains dedicated to supporting diversity initiatives, and I welcome any ideas or collaborations that further this mission.
