Donald W. Zantop Emerging Leader Award and Memorial Lecture
Donald W. Zantop, DVM (MSU ’76), Dipl. ABVP (Avian) was a small animal, avian and exotic animal practitioner and co-owner of the Fallston Veterinary Clinic in Fallston, VA. Dr. Zantop was recognized and valued by his colleagues and clients alike as a leader in avian medicine and surgery. He was a long time member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, was the Avian Specialty Examination Chair for the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners as well as past President of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the Mid-Atlantic States Association of Avian Veterinarians. Dr. Zantop enjoyed teaching and inspired many veterinarians to pursue excellence by pushing beyond conventional ideas of avian medicine, to developing innovative techniques, to willingly share their knowledge and expertise, to promote avian medicine, and to become deeply involved in our AAV.
Dr. Zantop passed away on October 13, 2011. In recognition of his substantial contributions to AAV and avian medicine and surgery, the Association of Avian Veterinarians established the Donald W. Zantop Memorial Lecture to annually recognize the achievements of an AAV member during the early part of their career, who exhibits many of the qualities recognized in Dr. Zantop. Prior to 2016, this award was titled the "Donald W. Zantop Emerging Leader Award" and presented to an individual who best exemplifies the qualities of an emerging leader and mentor. In 2016, this award was updated to the "Donald W. Zantop Memorial Lecture," and is now presented by the AAV Conference Committee to a presenter at the Annual Conference. The recipient is recognized in the AAV Conference Proceedings and receives a $200 honorarium.
