AAV Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Program

The AAV CBME is a remote learning, competency-based program in avian medicine for veterinary practitioners and students. The program provides access to a curriculum focused on elevating the medical education and practice competency of veterinarians in the realm of companion avian species.* Participants will further develop critical thinking and case management skills while being introduced to the latest information driving the practice of avian medicine. This course has been formatted to integrate into the busy schedule of students and practitioners and many of the classes are taught by ABVP specialists in Avian practice.

About this program:

Exotic companion animals, including birds and pet poultry, are an integral part of pet ownership. Increasingly fewer veterinary colleges have exotic companion animal programs today than in past years. The demand for basic competency in handling and triaging exotic companion birds and mammals in private practice is increasing while the baseline learning platforms in universities is decreasing.

The CBME Program is a multilevel program. The initial Level will encompass the following skills:

  • Triage of the critical companion avian patient
  • Restraint
  • Physical Examination
  • Hospitalization
  • Fluid therapy
  • How to obtain properly positioned radiographs
  • Sedation

Subsequent Advanced Levels will discuss the nuances of diagnostic testing as well as therapeutic and anesthetic techniques. Accurate anatomic terminology will be introduced and utilized in order to facilitate discussing your patient with specialists with accuracy. Important considerations for stabilization and hospitalization of your patients will be discussed until consultation or referral to an avian specialist or facility with more expertise is needed. Each step of the way, evidence-based medicine, discussions of peer reviewed articles, and links to reliable avian resources will be available.

Upon completion of this course you will be better prepared to incorporate pet avian species into your general practice and elevate the standard of care for these species. Following completion of each Level, practitioners will be provided a Certificate of Completion.** The AAV is a RACE approved provider and CE credits will be applied to participants upon completion of each segment.

*Psittacines, passerines, backyard poultry

** Completion of this program does not imply equivalency to those boarded in avian medicine.
