BP Oil Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico
Jun 23, 2010: The scale of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is unprecedented. You may feel sickened, frustrated, or even angry about it. Everyone, though, wants to know what they can do to help. Because of the scale of this disaster, a lot of help is needed. However, because of the scale, getting involved can be complicated. And although your skills and labor are useful, there’s still a lot you can do without going to the scene. Here’s some ways you can help:
1. Register with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to let them know your availability to go to the Gulf and help. The responder database is currently open to all wildlife or veterinary paraprofessionals including veterinarians, technicians, rehabilitators, biologists, and others with hands-on experience with wildlife. You can register with this service at
2. Donate supplies or money to one of the various response entities. There are funds established specifically for wildlife response, habitat recovery, support of the fisherman and communities impacted by the spill, and many more.
3. Stay informed and spread the word. Often the major media outlets only give the most superficial details. If you want to know what is really happening to wildlife, check with some of the website below. Then tell your clients about what’s happening and what you think should be done to help. Your opinion could have more impact on a client’s persuasion to help than the media.
4. Participate locally in conservation efforts, wildlife centers, and disaster planning panels. These groups are woefully under-supported and yet they are the key to prevention and response. Don’t underestimate the importance of local organizations—if disaster calls they will need you!
